China Exploration and Research Society(CERS). Experience and learn about the Chinese

biggest fundraiser of the year and the money we raise is for our spring livestock
shows as well as for donations to other campus activities. Highest bidder will
receive a gift certificate and limo ride and if we get an organization with a group
of high bidders, you can all ride in the limo! This is sure to be an unforgettable

8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. - The First Amendment on Campus
Dr. Lee Bird, Vice President for Student Affairs at
Oklahoma State University, and Mary Beth Mackin, Assistant Dean of Students at the
University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, and authors of the book The First Amendment on
Campus-A Handbook for College and University Administrators will share their
perspectives on considerations and best practices for administrators when working
with students on First Amendment issues. There will be two sessions available for
administrators and faculty. From 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Bird and Mackin will present a workshop
for administrators and staff, and from 12:30 to 2 p.m. faculty are invited to a Brown
Bag Development session. All presentations will take place in the Riverview Ballroom
in the UC. The University Bookstore will have copies of The First Amendment on
Campus available for those interested in examining the topic further.

Supported by the US Department of Education grant to develop an Asian Studies Minor
program at UWRF, the College of Arts and Sciences Asian Studies Minor Program Task
Force will initiate an Asian Film Series on December 1, 2008 with the show of Lust,
Caution. Directed by Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain; Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon),
this film is set against the background of Shanghai, China under the Japanese
occupation between 1937 and 1945, and vividly depicts the clashes between human
passion and the Chinese nationalism embodied by the student resistant movement
against the Chinese puppet government, or China's Vichy government, during World War
II.

There is an African proverb that says, “When two elephants fight, it’s the grass that gets injured.” For the children of Northern Uganda, their plight continues. The elephants are many: Kony and the LRA, Yoweri Museveni, racism, colonialism, religious upheaval, the IMF, the UN, the Acholi elders, 9/11, the War On Terror and more. The results have been catastrophic. The movie Uganda Rising addresses the history and current political upheaval in Africa, and specifically Uganda.
The Social Justice Series has been designed this year to bring an awareness and understanding of social justice issues within our community. Come and be an ally. The Social Justice Series is sponsored by the Office of the Chancellor, Student Affairs, and Ethnic Studies Minor.

Benjamin Ajak was born in 1982 in a village in Southern Sudan. In 1987, at the age of five, Benjamin's village was attacked and he fled alone into the night. Benjamin was one of twenty thousand boys, who became known to the world as The Lost Boys, who fled across Africa's largest country. Benjamin's bravery and perseverance through unimaginable injustices and hardships is a testimony to the strength of the human spirit. 4 p.m. - Human Rights Day: Effects of and Effective Responses to Torture, Dr. Blake Fry
Every year, hundreds of refugees and asylees who have been victims of government-sponsored torture come to the Twin Cities. Since 1985, the Minneapolis based Center for Victims of Torture has worked to heal the wounds of government-sponsored torture on individuals, their families and their communities, and to stop its practice. Come learn more about the work of the CVT and how you can help put a stop to government-sponsored torture. Tim Wise is among the most prominent anti-racist writers and activists in the U.S. He has spoken to over 300,000 people in 48 states, and on over 350 college campuses, including Harvard, Stanford, and the Law Schools at Yale and Columbia.
